I don't know anything about Mesmers in PVE, and its pretty hard to paly it there... its more of a PVP class. But from what I gather, there are lots of Me/Mo's out there, and a Me/N might be good. Most mesmers combos are having it as a secondary instead, like R/Me's and E/Me's.. even W/Me's.

Me/Mo for anything involving solo (55hp with IW or SoJ) or with henchies (hard res ftw).
Me/E and Me/N have better overall damage and degen capabilities, but for henchies you'd want something that can stay alive better.
Do not run an IW build in PvE, unless you are soloing. I have seen good pve IW'ers before, but it is far, far too easy for a mob to smack you, and you die fast on mesmer. The only effective way to run IW in group pve is to use it after the battle begins as a secondary damage source.

I use Me/E (Pure Mesmer w/ Glyph of Renewal) right now, I also like /Mo (for rebirth and/or smite) and /N for some nice synergies.
Gaahh, and another post of somone saying Mesmer isn't a PvE class....

One of my friends plays a Me/R just for fun to put his bear in game and cast Echo/Shatter hex in PvE
Using his animal as a Shatter Bomb
Me/N are mostly using Degen build (Which Im pure Dom Me/N, it isnt my case)
Me/Mo Pure Mesmer, but you use at least one slot to rez (Rebirth)
Me/R Like I said above
Me/W More PvP than PvE with Illusionary weaponary or you can just unlock warrior skill while you still Pure mesmer
Me/E If you want to use any ele spell, go on, but you have less energy than ele but with Fast casting, Erh, I dont really need to tell you how fast you can cast Flare or Meteor Shower

I started out as Me/E from pre-searing, and I must confess I never used any Ele skills. Since I do a lot of missions with henchies, I find Me/Mo more useful - resurrect and healing breeze (for when lina or alesia aren't quite up to the job) seem pretty effective.

I've been playing Me/R in PvE from the beginning, and I've noticed it's probably the least, or one of the least used combinations around. Which makes me like it more, because I try not to go with the crowd too much
What I like to do is move around on occasion. Most of the time I play pure or near pure mesmer. Sometimes though, I get bored with it, or I get my hands on a nice bow, and that makes me want to switch to ranger - and it's perfectly possible. Well, except for the fact that the ranger's armor is better than the mesmer's. I have a pet that I can take or leave at home whenever I feel like it. I've used the ranger's Serpents Quickness skill for a fast skill recharge, until capping Mantra of Recovery later in the game. And Troll Unguent is good because mesmers have rather bad self-healing.
Last but not least - interrupts. Both mesmer and ranger have a nice range of interrupts, I carry two most of the time and can pick the bonus on them, whether it'd be doing damage, draining energy, gaining energy, disabling the enemy skill for a while, etc.
My 2 cents, have fun with your mesmer and PM me if you need help

Same, I was just giving a minor example of a Me/W build that doesn't need to stray far from a puremesmer setup. I usually use WY in place of distort if I choose to run it (when capping warrior skills, etc).
